Getting your website domain name the easy way

So you’re looking to finally get that website you have been dreaming about up and running.

But where do you start?

Get yourself a website domain name!

Here’s my guide:

Keep it simple but appropriate to your business

You want to make sure that your website is easy to find, especially an address that people can remember.

Something like is going to be difficult for people to remember but also can easily lead to typos.

Something simple like says what your business is associated with and also is nice and short.  It is also important to point out that it’s good practice to have your keyword within your domain name as this helps when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). I will be posting another blog soon about this subject.

You can check the availability of the name you want in the Website Domain Name Checker I use with Heart Internet.

OK so now you have an idea of the name you would like to use, you are faced with another question.

.com, .net, .org,

There is no specific rule on which one to choose, usually what I recommend is that if you are a UK business, and especially if you are a local business like an electrician, landscape gardener,  accountant, etc. that is operating in a local geographical area as opposed to an international business, then a domain name is probably a more appropriate choice for you. It is telling your potential customers that you are a UK company basically.

What you could do though if you want to take the .com domain name off the market to prevent someone else registering it is to register it & then set up what is called domain parking for the .com domain.

This is very straightforward.

Basically, if you set your website up as a domain name & then someone types in .com instead of they would be redirected to the website so that you do not miss any traffic.

Don’t overpay for a domain name – unless you want to!

When you’re looking around you will probably come across domain names costing thousands, this is because people buy popular names they think people will want to purchase one day but they originally purchase these at the same sort of price that you would have if you had got there first.  Generally domain names cost around £10, a little more for .com and .net. so you don’t need to pay thousands – sometimes you just need to be a little clever and tweak the name slightly.

There are no guarantees that the name you want will be available and you may have to start the process again, this is why I recommend starting here when setting up a new business.

Is the website domain name you want available on the Website Domain Name Checker?

Don’t run the risk of waiting, the chances are that somebody may buy it if you don’t and then you’re left going through the whole process again.  This time though you could find yourself only having

So what are you waiting for, find your perfect website domain name now!
